Antique dark amber glass apothecary medicine bottle featuring an original paper label reading "(Aqueous) Thuja". A wonderful piece of vintage pharmacy history complete with a cork stopper, heavy paneled octagonal body, and authentic period character.
In 19th- and early 20th-century pharmacy and eclectic medicine, aqueous extracts of Thuja occidentalis (Northern White Cedar) were standard apothecary preparations dispensed for various traditional uses, including topical applications for skin growths, respiratory support, and herbal remedies. This water-based extraction held by the local pharmacist would have been utilized either directly or in custom-compounded prescriptions.
