Description

Up for sale is a scarce 1838 first edition copy of A Trip to Boston by Enoch Cobb Wines (E. C. Wines), published by Charles C. Little and James Brown in Boston. Written as a series of travel letters addressed to Joseph R. Chandler (editor of the United States Gazette), this work captures the author's observations traveling from Philadelphia through New York to Stonington and Boston.

Highlights & Content:

19th-Century Travel & Transit: Offers vivid first-hand accounts of early American travel, including steamboat and locomotive travel, sights in New York, and impressions of Boston (including the State House and Boston schools).

Provenance / Inscriptions: Features period contemporary ink inscriptions on the front endpaper, including "At Sea July 4, 1844 off Holmes Hole" (Martha's Vineyard).

Edition: Complete original 1838 first printing (224 pages).

Condition:

Exterior: Publisher's original blind-stamped textured cloth. Spine shows significant wear, tearing, and loss to the cloth casing, with the title label mostly chipped away. Covers remain attached, though fragile at the outer hinges.

Interior: Text block is complete and tight. Moderate age-toning and persistent foxing throughout, as expected for paper stock from this period. Previous owner signatures/notes on flyleaves in ink and pencil.

A wonderful piece of antebellum New England travel literature and postal/rail history for collectors of 19th-century Americana.
