Description
Up for sale is a wonderful piece of early pharmacy and regional Americana history: a small antique paneled glass apothecary bottle retaining its original paper label and cork stopper.
The crisp paper label reads "SPTS. TURPENTINE" (Spirits of Turpentine) and features the pharmacist's imprint: "MALCOLM HALSEY, Ph. G., Pharmacist, BELLPORT, L. I." (Long Island, New York). The reverse side of the bottle is embossed with a capacity marking of "2 OZ" near the shoulder. The bottle stands approximately 3.75 inches tall and currently contains a vibrant yellow vintage liquid sample.
Historical Significance:
Local independent apothecaries played a vital role in 19th- and early 20th-century American towns. Labeled bottles bearing the name of a specific local pharmacist—such as Malcolm Halsey of Bellport, Long Island—are exceptional finds for collectors of pharmacy antiques, medical bottles, and local ephemera. Spirits of turpentine was a common household remedy and solvent stocked in period pharmacies for both medicinal liniments and industrial uses.
Condition:
Good antique/vintage condition. The glass is clear with nice character, the original cork remains intact in the neck, and the paper label is remarkably well-preserved with legible typography and minor age toning. Please review all photos for exact condition and measurements.
