Item Description
Antique c.1855 Sixth-Plate Ambrotype – Two Young Girls / Sisters
Stunning Hand-Tinted Details & Deep Three-Dimensional Glass Layering
Up for auction is a beautiful, deeply charming mid-19th-century Sixth-Plate Ambrotype portrait of two young girls, likely sisters, housed in its original period case.
The Image & Process:
This image is a classic example of the early glass ambrotype format. Because the collodion image resides on a clear glass plate over a separate dark backing layer, it exhibits an incredible visual depth. The dark portions of the girls' pattern dresses appear to sit beautifully on a layer directly below the highlighted details, creating an exquisite three-dimensional effect unique to high-quality ambrotypes. Both children feature highly vibrant, hand-tinted rosy cheeks applied with precision by the studio artist.
The Case & Presentation:
The glass plate is safely housed behind its original oval brass mat and decorative foil preserver. It is nestled inside a gorgeous, period-correct dark embossed leather (or leatherette) over wood case featuring a complex scrolling foliate and shield motif. The interior lid features a wonderfully intact, plush orange-salmon pressed velvet pinch cushion with an elegant border and central cross-flower design.
Condition Note:
The image displays beautiful contrast with typical light age-appropriate dusting/ambient tarnish behind the glass. The case halves remain structurally sound and intact, showing light, honest corner and spine wear consistent with a piece from the 1850s. The original side hook/clasp is present. Please review the high-resolution photos with the ruler included to verify exact dimensions and cosmetic condition before bidding.
