Original 1874 first edition of An Icelandic-English Dictionary, based on the manuscript collections of the late Richard Cleasby, enlarged and completed by Gudbrand Vigfusson, M.A., with an introduction and life of Richard Cleasby by George Webbe Dasent, D.C.L. Published in Oxford at the Clarendon Press in 1874.
Format: Large hardcover reference volume bound in blue textured cloth with stamped borders and gilt spine titling.
Features: A monumental work of Old Norse and Icelandic philology, including comprehensive preliminary matter, outlines of grammar, specimen texts, an extensive main dictionary text, and the rear addenda section. Features a notable historical bookplate/ownership stamp on the front pastedown for Steven T. Byington (70 Otis Street, East Cambridge, Mass.), a known individual associated with early American scholarly translation and anarchist/Georgist circles.
Condition Notes:
Antique/vintage scholarly condition. The blue cloth binding shows heavy splitting, cracking, and loss along the paper-covered spine joints/hinges, with shelf wear and rubbing to the board edges. The inner text block remains secure and tightly bound. Interior pages are remarkably clean and well-preserved, displaying minimal age toning or foxing, with crisp, clear typography throughout.
